High Levels of Toxic ‘Forever Chemicals’ in Popular Smartwatch Bands

Study conducted by researchers at the University of Notre Dame has revealed alarming levels of toxic "forever chemicals," specifically perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), in smartwatch and fitness tracker bands. This research analyzed 22 different brands and found that 15 of them contained significant concentrations of these harmful substances, which are known for their persistence in the environment and potential health risks.
Presence of PFAS: The study identified that many smartwatch bands, particularly those made from fluoroelastomers—a synthetic rubber prized for its durability and resistance to sweat—contained high levels of PFAS. These chemicals are often referred to as "forever chemicals" due to their inability to break down naturally in the environment and their tendency to accumulate in the human body over time.
Health Risks: PFAS exposure has been linked to a variety of serious health issues, including cancer, liver damage, immune system disorders, and developmental problems. The specific chemical detected at elevated levels was perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), which the Environmental Protection Agency has classified as likely harmful. Notably, some smartwatch bands tested contained PFHxA concentrations exceeding 1,000 parts per billion (ppb), far surpassing levels typically found in consumer products.
